Yesterday I was watching an interview with Will Smith on "Inside the Actor's Studio." At the time the interview was recorded, Will was promoting his movie "Ali." I have seen the show and love the calming scene where Muhammad Ali says, "the more real you get, the more unreal life is going to get." This quote always sets me back as I think about the impact of being "real." God knew that if each of us could just be the people we were created to be, we could affect those around us and continue to be transformed ourselves.
(There is a book on this very subject that is worth reading, it is titled "TrueFaced" and is written by three men from Phoenix, Arizona, Bill Thrall, Bruce McNicol and John Lynch.)
This leads me to think about Jesus and how he walked on earth as himself; the only Son of God in human flesh. His miracles, gentle voice and righteous anger gave those around him a glimpse of who God is. He was patient and fabulous at the same time and the more real He got, the more unreal life around him became.
Genuine realness is worth pursuing. The longer we delay a complete surrender of ourselves to God, the longer it will take to be transformed into the men and women that God longs for us to be.
Now that I have begun walking in my own skin.... I think I'm really going to like it.
