Two Types

The other day, I spent some time in a book store. I love the flow and feel of book stores. For some reason, we respect the unspoken rule of quite in book stores as if they are libraries. On this day I was interested in Henry Nouwen. It is good to know he is still publishing books even after his death. His wisdom goes on and on, I can't get enough. But his ideas are only one of two general ideas found in the Christian/Religious/Jewish/Spiritual section at B&N. Nouwen, like Merton, Bruckner and Taylor penetrate a deep place in us that longs for brokenness to be healed, filled, transformed. These authors don't excuse or deny brokenness, they name it as a gift necessary in deeper understanding of God and of self. Transformed brokenness leads us to listen to others so that we might help, empathize, and give.
The other general idea found in this section of books is "success" and the avenues necessary to get it. The whole idea of success as a valid way of honoring and worshipping God leaves me empty and lacking. Don't bring me gold when I need water. Don't ask me to pull up my boot straps when I have no shoes.
Maybe my success is that I am broken?
